According to data on various repatriation exercises promoted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), no less than 20,197 Nigerians stranded in various countries have returned to their homes voluntarily.
Standed Nigerians return to their country under the IOM’s auxiliary voluntary return and reintegration program, which involves interventions in various Nigerian missions abroad.
Women and girls account for nearly 88% of returnees, while men account for 13%.
Most returnees belong to the age group of 18 to 39 years old, with the age group of 18 to 25 years old being particularly vulnerable to traffickers.
According to IOM, “the stranded Nigerian immigrants return home from irregular migration routes in the Mediterranean along the transport and destination countries.”

IOM also revealed that economic instability is the main cause of irregular immigration, while 94% of returnees believe that seeking better economic opportunities is its main motivation.
Only 2% seek specific job opportunities, 1% try to escape from adverse family situations, while 3% have multiple reasons, including education, unity and escape from violence. Italy, Libya and Mali are one of the most interesting destination countries for returnees.
Supreme Court invalid river local government election
The Supreme Court declared that the local government election held by the River State Independent Election Commission (RSIEC) on October 5, 2024 is invalid.
The Supreme Court ruled in a judgment made by Judge Jamilu Tukur that the election process did not comply with legal requirements, thus rendering the election invalid.
