People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Segun Sowunmi called on Peter Obi to consider returning to the PDP ahead of the 2027 presidential election to strengthen its political prospects.
In an interview with Seun Okinbaloye’s “Podcast Microphone” hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, Sowunmi argued that Obi, who is the presidential candidate of Labor (LP) in the 2023 election, needs to compete in a more substantial platform in 2027.
“Looking forward in 2027, Nigeria’s PDP will open its process to announce when it will be available, and anyone with confidence should move forward and do so.” Sowunmi said.
He went on to add that if Obi rejoined the PDP, he could make a compelling case for the party’s presidential vote, emphasizing that the PDP was originally conceived by southern leaders such as the late Alex Ekwueme.
“If I were Peter Obi, I would go back to the PDP and make a strong reason for the presidential vote. This party came to mind in the bedroom of the (deceased) Alex Ekwueme, and at first I didn’t understand IGBO, the Southern leaders and why other influential figures in the PDP, we knew this ticket, we knew this ticket, we knew this ticket, our ticket, ” Sowunmi explained.
Sowunmi also noted that Obi’s impressive performance in the 2023 election, which he received over 6 million votes without strong support from the governor or major politicians, demonstrates his potential.
He suggested that with the support of 12 governors and the party’s strong grassroots infrastructure, Obi’s chances will be greatly improved.
“We have covered every region, but we haven’t gone to the Southeast. Despite this, Obey is still free to make his own decisions. If his number of people and subsequently his animation energy is to follow him into the PDP and he is the presidential candidate, I can guarantee you will guarantee that he will take him to the Southeast, South, Christian North and North Central and North Central,” Sowunmi prediction.
