Former Manchester United and Rochdale midfielder Joe Thompson died at the age of 36 after a prolonged battle with cancer.
Thompson was diagnosed for the third time in April 2023 after four years of retirement from professional football in 2019. He has beaten the disease twice before in his game career.
Thompson started his football journey since he was nine years old, in the Manchester Academy System and then moved to Rochdale, where he spent most of his career.
He was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma, a blood cancer that spreads to the lungs.
Despite the past recovery, the disease recovered again last year.
Rochdale confirmed Thompson died peacefully at home on Thursday surrounded by his loved ones.

In a statement, the club paid tribute to the former midfielder:
“Joe, who fought bravely against cancer for the third time, was at home peacefully with his family on Thursday.”
“He is known for Rochdale as the guy of Joey T, who made over 200 appearances for local teams, representing the badge with pride.” We first met Joe, mainly a talented footballer, but we will soon grow to worship his loving, infectious personality. ”
Rochdale, who was first signed in 2005, also emphasized the courage and strength he showed in life and on the court.
