4 Nigerians recruited to fight for Russia killed in Ukrainian drone strike

At least four Nigerians recruited to fight for Russia in Ukraine have been killed on the battlefield in Ukraine, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Daily Nigeria newspaper exclusively reported that the slain Nigerians – Adam Anas, Akinlawon Tunde Quyuum, Abugu Stanley Onyeka and Balogun Ridwan Adisa were recruited under the guise of “security work” but were eventually drafted into the army after three weeks of training and deployed to the war front.

While the four, Anas, Quyuum Onyeka and Abubakar Adamu (the sole survivor) traveled together in November 2025, Mr Adisa was recruited earlier this year.

Sources said Nigerian fighters were killed on the front lines on different dates between December 2025 and January 2026.

An investigation by this newspaper revealed that the Russian military did not contact the families of the fallen soldiers, just as they warned other African mercenaries not to report incidents to the families of the fallen soldiers.

It is understood that news of the deaths of the four Nigerians first spread in a secret WhatsApp group opened by African mercenaries.

“We learned about the death of our brother through a colleague. His photo was posted in a secret WhatsApp group. Our family was never contacted by the Russian authorities,” said a relative of the late conscript Adam Anas.

Mr Adam and his companions’ ordeal began after informally accepting a “security job offer” from Nigerian agent Emiola Muhammad.
