
The Independent National Election Commission (INEC) said its office in the Guadabawa local government area of Sokoto State has been destroyed by a fire.
State Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voters Education Commission Sam Olumekun revealed this in a statement Friday, February 14, 2025, saying the fire destroyed the ballot box and other materials.
According to him, at a regular weekly meeting held on Thursday, the committee recorded a sad outbreak in the Guadabawa LGA, reported by the state government office, Mrs. Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa.
He said the fire began in the early hours of Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
“The entire building was damaged. The damaged items included furniture and fixtures and movable election facilities, including 558 ballot boxes, 186 ballot fences (cubicles), 186 election bags and various registration area centers (RAC) Materials (e.g. 12 large tanks (1,000 liters), 400 liters) Olokunken said.
“Preliminary reports from our state office show a sudden surge in public power supply before the incident.”
However, he said the safety and security agencies are investigating the actual cause of the fire, adding that no injuries or deaths were recorded.
He said the commission is working to find alternative temporary facilities in local government areas to prevent its activities from being completely destroyed.
