Tinubu appoints former INEC president as presidential adviser for livestock reform

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Attahiru Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Election Commission (INEC), as an advisor and coordinator of the President’s Livestock Reform Initiative.

The appointment was announced Friday night in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, presidential adviser for Information and Strategy. The move marks a renewed government effort to address the long-term challenges of the Nigerian livestock sector.

Prior to his appointment, JEGA served as co-chair of the President’s Livestock Reform Implementation Committee.

Last year, Tinubu stressed his government’s commitment to transforming the country’s livestock sector into a commercial industry. He expressed regret for the long-standing negligence on livestock agriculture at the commercial level, noting that Nigeria could have benefited greatly if it had developed Nigeria properly.

In 2023, the President approved the establishment of a livestock committee to resolve conflicts between herders and farmers and strengthen the livestock and dairy industry.

The committee was established after Tinubu received a report on the National Conference on Livestock Reform and Reports on Easing Necessary Conflicts in Nigeria.
