A 17-year-old girl identified as Elizabeth is trying to get water from the river to supply water in Koropka, a suburb of Minna, the Niger state capital.
People in the Koroka community have been living in water without pipes due to ongoing construction projects in the community, according to leaders
Therefore, residents of the community rely on river water to supply water.
Zakari Lambata, a resident of the area, said that when the incident happened, the teenage girl, her sister and some Koropka residents went to the river to pick up the water on Saturday, March 8, 2025.
“The girl’s sister ran to me to help search and rescue her drowning sister. It took nearly an hour to search before some young people in the area recovered their bodies. This was an urgent call to the government and companies to find a way to restore water supply to the people to avoid more casualties. As the water supply to the water plates was cut off, the Chanchaga River was the main source of water for people,” he said.
