Rivers Parliament issues election president arrest warrant, announcing new LG election date

The Rivers State Capitol has issued an arrest warrant to the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Election Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (RTD), after he failed to appear before the parliament after the 72-hour final atum termination.

The warrant was released at a plenary meeting on Monday, and the General Assembly took action after Enebeli failed to comply with the deadline. The election chief announced on August 9, 2025 as the date for a new local government (LG) election in the state after the Supreme Court ruled that the local government on October 5, 2024 polls were conducted in Rivers.

The congress led by Amaewhule promised to investigate Enebeli’s role in the abolished LG poll, which led to the issuance of Ultimatum. In related developments, Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara called for dialogue with members of parliament to discuss the implementation of the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The Supreme Court’s ruling also includes an order prohibiting the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Federal Accounting General and other federal agencies from releasing funds to the River State Government until the court’s instructions are followed. The court’s judgment, made by Judge Emmanuel Akomaye, upholds the legitimacy of the parliament led by Amaewhule, dismissing Governor Fobala’s appeal. The court ordered Amaewhule to resume the meeting immediately with other elected members of the Rivers State Capitol.
