Today, the House has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to direct the country’s Internet service providers to block all websites hosting obscene and pornographic content and take effect immediately.
Legislators passed the resolution by passing a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, a member of the Katsina State. Tafoki claims that online pornography is becoming a global problem, and Nigeria, according to him, is a “religious country” that prohibits nudity and pornography, but has not taken enough steps to address the problem.
Lawmakers say several countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East have enacted laws banning pornography.
He also cites warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the negative effects of pornography, including the potential to encourage adultery, prostitution and addiction.
“Celebrity of psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued a harsh warning about the psychological, sociological and psychological consequences of watching pornography,” he said.
House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas voted for the vote by lawmakers to support the motion. The House directed the NCC to impose penalties on service providers who did not comply with the directive.
