Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk told his teammates after he withdrew from the Champions League at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
Van Dijk plays PSG to beat Liverpool in the 16-stage Champions League.
Last week, Premier League leaders beat PSG 1-0 in their first leg in Paris.
However, Ousmane Dembele restored equality at Anfield, as the return trip ended 1-0 after 120 minutes.
PSG then won the game through a penalty kick, thanks to their goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who scored two good saves from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones.
Speaking on Amazon Prime after the game, Van Dijk revealed that he told Liverpool players to keep their “chin” after the painful defeat of free throws, urging them to their next match against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final over the weekend.
“It’s a very intense football game,” Van Dijk said. “The situation where Liverpool showed in Paris was completely there, unfortunately we were in the penalty, and that’s the reality.
“I think in the first half of the year we created dangerous moments, they also had quality and then it came down to punishment.
“It’s part of football, and I said to these guys, obviously, you might be disappointed because we don’t play, but the next challenge is ready for the next one, and it’s a beautiful challenge on the weekend.”
