Professor Urhobo World Council member Sunny Ahwefeada lamented that safety operators failed to arrest those responsible for killing 17 soldiers in the Okuma community Delta State A year later.

Naija News On March 14, 2024, the military reportedly occupied the community in the river community in the southern local government area of Ughelli, the state, which caused many residents to flee the creek and other neighboring communities.

In an interview on the channel TV show Sunrise Daily on Friday, Ahwefeada said it would be a long way to go to identify the people behind the outrageous crime and bring it to booking.

The Urhobo leader also lamented the death of an Okra community leader arrested after the incident, stressing that other leaders remained in custody months after their arrest and called for their release.

He said “We are all confused and it is very unfortunate that after a year in the intelligence community, it has not been able to identify the real perpetrator and bring it to any progress in booking.

“And I should record here here that identifying the offender and booking it is a step towards closure. So we are waiting and hoping that one day the intelligence community will meet the needs so that we can actually understand the people behind the outrageous crimes.

“These arrested people, even if they are considered suspects, should be handed over to the police and heard in court. Therefore, in our case, they are still innocent without conviction and we believe they have been detained for too long.

“They were arrested between August 18 and 20, which was March, which was more than half a year since being imprisoned, and as I said before, one of the 80-year-old men died in military detention. So we think these people should be released.”
