Nigeria Customs Services Corporation (NCS) intercepted 1,149 Senior Sports Spirits (PMSs) and allegedly smuggled along Dorofi and Kan Iyaka Axis at Gembu-Cameroon Border in Taraba.
This was disclosed by Customs General Bashir Adeniyi on Friday, March 14, while auctioning the captured oil products to the public in Jalingo.
Operation Tornado broke the smuggling network and was conducted between March 8 and 9, 2025, Adeniyi said.
He explained that the operation was based on reliable intelligence and was done in cooperation with other agencies.
“Our intelligence-led operations have undermined the emerging smuggling corridors on the Gembu-Dorofi-Kan Iyaka-Cameroon border.
“We remain committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s fuel is not illegal in neighboring countries at the expense of our economy,” he said.
The captured petroleum product contains 30 liters of Jerrycans, totaling about 34 million liters, the controller added.
He said a dedicated transport vehicle worth N4 million was also seized, bringing the total tax and fee value of the seized to more than 37 million.
Adeniyi noted that the difficult terrain in the region has contributed to the prevalence of smuggling.
“Rough landscapes are a challenge, but we are working to deploy technologies to enhance real-time intelligence and surveillance that will improve our ability to track and intercept illegal activities,” he said.
