Kano government clarifies appeal court ruling against Sanusi

The Kano State Government has addressed widespread misunderstandings about the recent Court of Appeal’s decision on the ongoing emirate dispute, urging the public to rely on accurate legal information.

Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, spokesman for Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, stressed in a statement that it is necessary to clarify reports circulating in the media.

Attorney General and Judicial Commissioner Haruna Dederi spoke at a press conference of the Secretariat of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kano, explaining that the Court of Appeals upheld the repeal of the Kano Emilat Commission Law, the 2019 Kano Emilat Commission Law, and introduced the former court and overturned the ruling court of ruling rule.

However, Dederi noted that Alhaji Aminu Dan’Agundi, who was dissatisfied with the ruling, has since filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He further noted that the Court of Appeal’s judgment remains valid and binding unless the Supreme Court overturns it.

He also articulated the importance of enforcement granted by the Court of Appeal, describing it as a standard legal process designed to maintain the status quo until the Supreme Court makes its final decision.

“The Kano State Government urges the public to remain calm, abide by the law and avoid any kind of provocation. The government also directs its legal team to study the results of the lawsuit and determine the next step that is consistent with the law,” the statement said.

On behalf of the Governor, the Attorney General expressed his appreciation for the patience, understanding and unwavering prayer of the people of Kano State, in a bid to pray for peace and progress throughout the country and nation.
