Rivers State Capitol supports President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state and guarantees full support from parliament for the sole executive.
This was included in a statement issued on Wednesday, March 19 by House Speaker Martin Amaewhule.
On Tuesday, March 18, President Bola Tinubu declared the river in a state of emergency after a protracted political crisis and instability in the state.
Tinub also suspended the governor, his deputy and state legislators.
He then nominated retired Deputy Admiral IBOK-ETE IBA as a national administrator.
The Rivers Legislature has been remitting money after the conflict between Fubara and Nyesom Wike in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
In a statement signed Wednesday by House faction spokesman Martin Amaewhule, loyal to Wike, the convention said it welcomed the president’s declaration and accused the governor of “violating court orders and constitutional violations.”
The Speaker said the governor was in crisis after failing to maintain his position.
“The court confirmed the governor’s autocratic and authoritarian action in which he also unconstitutionally hindered the River State Capitol, which is the act of the government, which is the operation of the government, which is the basis of the situation.”
Amaewhule described the president’s decision as in the “best interest of the nation” and urged residents to remain calm when the sole manager is responsible.
“We assure everyone, our voters that we will abide by this statement even if this is not what we pray for.”
“The President acts in the best interest of the country and we call on you to remain calm because the sole executive appointed by the President assumes his duties for the best interests of our state and nation.”
The spokesperson assured the General Assembly’s full support for the sole administrator and promised to cooperate to guide the state in an emergency period.
He added: “Rest assured that we will provide any kind of support required by Rivers State Capitol in the best interest of our dear state.”
