    Nigeria is investigating Tiktok and TrueCaller

    Nigeria is investigating Tiktok and Truecaller - Nigeria Data Protection Commission boss

    The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has begun investigating data processing practices in Tiktok and Truecaller after growing concerns about potential violations of potential privacy

    NDPC CEO Dr Vincent Olatunji announced the news today at a press conference in Abuja, who also revealed the release of the Nigerian Data Protection Act – Directive for General Application and Implementation (NDPC Act – GAID – GAID), 2025.

    Dr Olatunji said the committee’s main focus is how these platforms manage personal data of Nigerian users, including potential consent breach, data sharing with third parties and overall compliance with the Nigerian Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023. He confirmed that NDPC is actively studying the data processing of Tiktok and TrueCaller to ensure NDIGE’s data processing NDPC to ensure their data processing.

    He added: “The purpose is to protect the privacy of Nigerians and to hold organizations accountable for how they collect, store and use personal data.”

    This survey is growing in the increasing number of global tech companies’ scrutiny on data privacy, especially on how to handle, store and disseminate beyond national borders.

    NDPC Act – released in 2025, today released a detailed framework for implementing Nigeria’s data protection law, outlining compliance guidelines, enforcement mechanisms and obligations for public and private organizations.

    Dr. Olatunji stressed that the directive aims to enhance Nigeria’s digital economy by promoting trust in data governance while ensuring respect for individual privacy in accordance with international best practices. He reiterated that companies operating in Nigeria must comply with the country’s data protection regulations or face regulatory actions, including fines and potential restrictions.

    The NDPC has urged the public to report any data privacy practices and reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and due process in the investigation. The committee noted that reporting data breaches has become more accessible through dedicated channels on its official website.
