This is after the demolition of a series of houses and buildings in Port Harcourt.
A new court ruling has ordered the Rivers State government to pay affected residents to illegally demolished residents in the state.
In an order from the Rivers High Court in Port Harcourt, a payment of 1.1 billion guilds was paid after one mile and two waterfronts in the Port Harcourt Municipal Government Area.
Affected areas include: Egede, Iruala, Elechi Phase 1, Elechi Beach Waterfront, Nanka, Ogwu Waterfront, Okwele and Soku Waterfront
Residents sued the government in 2022 through their attorney Tonye Igeri.

The ruling, presiding judge Sika Aprioku said the government violated their human rights because they were not informed before the house was demolished.
The judge ordered the state to pay 900 million guilds as compensation for rights violations, and another 2 million were included in the fine.

Igeri added that efforts will be made to ensure that the victims receive the granted money, noting that many have died or lost everything.
“As the court said, my advice to the government is to correctly identify the affected property owners, provide alternative shelters or make adequate compensation for them before demolition,” he added
