King Charles was taken to the hospital Thursday after experiencing side effects in cancer treatment.
Buckingham Palace said Charles “needed a brief observation” before returning to Clarence House.
He canceled his day to Birmingham on Friday, March 28 to prioritize his recovery as a precaution.
The 76-year-old king is said to have done well in his London home, and he is studying state documents and calling from his study.
One source described it as “the smallest bump on a road heading in the right direction”.
The King visited the London clinic Thursday morning and traveled out of the hospital by car. During his brief stay, the Queen did not join him.
“After the scheduled and ongoing cancer treatment this morning, the King experienced temporary side effects and required a brief observation in the hospital,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
“So the afternoon engagement under je was postponed.
“The Ma Under has now returned to the Clarence House, as a preventive measure, medical advice has been taken, and tomorrow’s diary plan will also be rescheduled.
“Under Ma, I want to apologize to all those who may be inconvenient or disappointed.”
Charles was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February 2024 and performed a public-oriented role in April, despite being still receiving weekly treatment.
He has been busy with a series of events this month, including a media reception on Wednesday night after the soil exhibition that day, and will make a historic state-owned visit to Italy in a 10-day period.
It is understood that overseas tours with the Queen will be held from April 7 to 10, which will make Charles the first British monarch to the Italian House of Parliament, which is expected to proceed as planned.
Last week, the King made a three-day whirlwind visit to Northern Ireland and received a high-profile audience earlier in March, including key politicians such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and New Canada’s Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Charles is said to be known for his workaholics and is said to have flourished in recent months with open and state responsibilities, believing they are good for his overall health.
His long visit to Australia and Samoa last fall was described as a “perfect supplement” for the monarch.
Since he was diagnosed last year, it is understood that the King’s participation diary has been fully consulted with his medical team at various stages to protect and prioritize his recovery.
Sources stressed that the hospital visit was not a major development, and there were no further updates to the King’s health, and any minor changes were made to his diary and may need to be announced in due course next week.
The king was scheduled to meet with the audience at Buckingham Palace Thursday afternoon, but was postponed due to his hospitalization.
He also planned a busy day in Birmingham on Friday, with four engagements back to back.
The London Clinic is the same hospital, and his prostate was treated in January last year and where the Princess of Wales underwent abdominal surgery the same month.
Details of the King’s side effects have not been disclosed, but they are understood to be temporary and not uncommon.
It is understood that the palace’s announcement was published later Thursday as the king needed to consult his staff and medical team after he returned to Clarence House.
It was decided to balance that canceling the visit to Birmingham was a precautionary measure, which was wiser.
A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said: “Under Ma will receive certificates from ambassadors from three different countries this afternoon.
“Tomorrow, he will be doing four public events in Birmingham and they are very disappointed to disappear under this situation.
“He really hopes that they can rearrange in due time and apologize the deepest to all those who are working to make the planned visit possible.”
