Senate leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, said that the National Assembly will not be opposed by Nigerians in the case of a state of emergency declared by Rivers.
He asserted that despite public opposition to the declaration, it was in the national interest, not based on partisan production, nor on the whimsical and inclined to the presidency.
When management of Ekiti State University awarded an honorary doctorate degree on Saturday, Bamidele said that his nod to the president’s announcement was to defend their sworn in and always worked wholeheartedly for the interests of Nigeria.
The Senate said the Senate would neither waver nor be upset in the face of criticism, which described it as part of democratic growth, adding that the reaction would give them more courage and enthusiasm to work for the public good.
“This does not mean that we are afraid of criticism as the most important democratic system. We are not, we will never be because we believe that democracy will naturally flourish in public criticism. However, such criticism must be constructive and structural to provide alternative, credible and patriotic initiatives.
“The reason for this attack is purely based on emotions rather than reasons; emotions rather than substance. Even stronger, I believe it is the driving force for the pursuit of a greater public good, because there are more components to my constituents and Nigerians as a whole,” He added.
