Autopsy reveals the cause of death of Nigerian boxer, who plunges in a fight in Ghana

The autopsy was performed on the body of 40-year-old Nigerian boxer Segun “Success” Olanrewaju, who fell in a boxing match on the Bukom boxing stage on Saturday, March 29, 2025, showing he stood out from his heart arrest.

The former national and West African lightweight champion faced Accra-born John Mbanugu, nicknamed “Power” when he suddenly fell in the midfield, prompting the referee to immediately call for medical assistance. Medical professionals rushed to the scene, but despite attempts to revive him, the 40-year-old boxer was declared D3AD. Read here.

Remi Aboderin, secretary general of the Nigerian Boxing Control Commission and chairman of the West African Boxing Union, announced the results of the autopsy on journalists, said preliminary postmortem results showed that cardiac arrest was the cause of death, but further investigation was needed and further investigation was required before the robot was released.

“Preliminary autopsy results show that Segun died of sudden cardiac arrest. But further investigation of his heart condition is needed, so his body will not be released to Nigeria for burial until about two weeks.”

The autopsy was conducted after a court order on Wednesday, April 2, when the Nigerian boxer died.
