Police summon Emir Sanusi II to Abuja

Police summon Emir Sanusi II to Abuja to march with Sallah in Kano.

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) formally invited Kano’s 16th Emir of Mohamed Sanusi II to inquire about the violence that broke out in Kano’s recent Eid-el-fitr parade, resulting in the death of members of the local police station.

The monarch was invited after a deadly incident in which Emir’s entourage moved from Eid to the palace in a traditional parade. The conflict damaged the originally peaceful celebrations, resulting in the tragic death of one alert member Surajo Rabiu and another injury.

The invitation was conveyed in a formal letter dated 4 April 2025 and signed by the Chief of Police Olajide Rufus Ibitoye, on behalf of the head of the Deputy Inspector General of the Police Force Intelligence Department (FID) Abuja.

    This letter has been read

“I have instructions from the Inspector General of the Police Department to invite you to conduct an investigation meeting through the instructions from the Force Intelligence Department of the Deputy Inspector General of the Police Department (FID) to learn about the events that occurred during the Sallah celebrations in your domain.”

In the letter, the police asked the monarch to appear in the military intelligence department of Abuja, opposite the police headquarters at 10:00 am on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

Tensions in Kano State have been heightened due to increased developments, due to security concerns, with the earlier decision to ban the annual Durba Festival. The ban was announced a few days before the Eid Festival celebrations and was intended to prevent any subdivision of law and order during the festival.

However, despite the suspension of Duba, a convoy parade was still held on Emir Sanusi II on the third day of the Eid celebration.
