U.S. President Donald Trump expressed doubts about the pace of nuclear talks with Iran on Monday, April 14, indicating that the country may have intentionally delayed the process.
“We’re having a meeting with them on Saturday. We’re going to have another meeting next Saturday. I said, ‘That’s a long time.’ You know, it’s a long time, so I think they might be pounding us.
Trump reiterated his administration’s position that Iran must abandon all ambitions to develop nuclear weapons.
“Iran must get rid of the concept of nuclear weapons. They cannot have nuclear weapons,” he said.
After Saturday’s meeting in Oman, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told state media that both sides were “very close” to establishing a framework for further negotiations. However, Trump expressed concerns about the extended timetable and questioned Iran’s intentions.
“I think they’re pounding us because they’re used to dealing with stupid people in this country,” he said.
The president stressed that negotiations must develop rapidly, warning that Iran is “close to possess” nuclear weapons. If diplomatic efforts fail, he once again raises the possibility of military action.
“If we have to do something very demanding, we will do it,” Trump said.
Tensions remain high, Tehran warned that any attack on Iranian territory could escalate into a wider regional conflict involving the United States.
