Gun man detained at UnitedHealthcare headquarters

A man was detained on Monday, April 14 for the incident that attracted the attention of federal authorities outside the UnitedHealthCare company headquarters in Minnettonka, Minnesota.

The arrests came months after New York United Health Care CEO Brian Thompson received high-profile attention.

The unidentified suspect reportedly had been armed and asked for $1 million after a call with law enforcement, authorities said. Sources said the man was sitting in a car outside the healthcare giant’s office, claiming to have a pistol and insisting on talking to negotiators. Law enforcement later confirmed that a gun was found in his car.

The FBI responded to the scene with local police and successfully convinced the suspect to surrender. Large law enforcement agencies were surrounding the building early Monday morning, and the Minnetka Police Department confirmed that it was “no threat to the public” after its arrest.

This situation has attracted further attention to the security of UnitedHealthcare headquarters. The facility has reportedly increased protections since the December 4 killing of Midtown Manhattan CEO Brian Thompson. Police have been keeping a visible presence on the site since then, according to local media reports.

Thompson was shot dead just hours before he spoke at a meeting scheduled to be held in New York. Luigi Mangione, 26, allegedly pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder and terrorism. He also faces federal charges, with U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announcing prosecutors to death.

Bondy described the killing as “acts of political violence” and said that Mangione deliberately followed and murdered Thompson during the day, endangering the public. Mangione’s attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo criticized the federal government’s response, saying it seeks to execute “barbaric”.

Authorities have not released details about any possible connection between the suspect and Mangione on Monday. An investigation is underway.
