War: NATO Secretary-General visits Ukraine and announces firm support

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte visited Odesa in southern Ukraine on Tuesday, April 15 with President Volodymyr Zelensky, reaffirmed the coalition’s firm support for Ukraine after a deadly Russian missile strike in the north of the country.

The visit came two days after Russian ballistic missiles attacked Sumi City, killing at least 35 people and injuring more than 100 others.

Rut’s trip coincided with the U.S.’s efforts toward a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine and criticized President Zelensky after former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Zelensky, Rut stressed that NATO continues to unite with Kiev despite increasing calls for peace talks.

“NATO stands with Ukraine. You and I know that’s the case since the beginning. I know some people have questioned NATO’s support in recent months, but there is no doubt that our support is unwavering.”

He also confirmed that he and Zelensky discussed ongoing negotiations with Kiev and Moscow by the Trump administration.

“These discussions are complex, especially after such horrible violence, but we all support President Trump’s efforts to peacefully besides,” Rut added.

U.S. President Donald Trump has caused controversy, blamed Zelensky for causing the war, which began in February 2022 with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, Rut dismissed these claims.

He said firmly: “Russia is the invader. Russia began this war. There is no doubt.”

Ukrainian President Zelensky said the focus of the negotiations is to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.

“Everyone clearly sees how urgent Ukraine’s demand for air defense systems and missile operations is,” he said.

“The Patriot systems are defensive weapons. We don’t just ask them – we’re ready to buy them.”
