The House directed the only Chief Executive of Rivers State Ibok-Ibit Ibbeth (Rtd.) Deputy Executive to report to the National Assembly the legislative approval to approve all administrative actions taken during the ongoing state of emergency. House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen made charges at the inauguration of a 21-member oversight committee that oversees IBAS activities. He stressed the need for transparency, accountability and strict compliance with the constitution. The move comes after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a six-month state of emergency in the river, which led to a suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the disbandment of the state capitol. Speaker Abbas reminded the committee in the Plateau (2004), Ekiti (2006) and Borno, Adamawa and Yobe (2013) that the National Assembly intervened in the National Assembly during similar crises. He stressed that the Legislature has a constitutional obligation to intervene when elected state legislatures cannot function. He further pointed out that the caretaker government in the river should continue to focus on law and order while ensuring that the basic functions of the government continue until democracy is fully restored. Administrators must report regularly to the National Assembly to ensure the public interest is protected, Abbas said. The current emergency measures are a necessary step to restore democratic governance of the river state. He also praised President Tinobus’s decisive action, calling it a patriotic move aimed at restoring peace, order and stability in the state. Report to NASS’s post for legislation to approve housing orders, River Administrator IBAS first appeared on the Linda Ikeji blog.
