The tragedy struck a peaceful Zikke village in the Barcelona local government area of the Plateau state on Monday, April 14, as armed personnel believed to have carried out a brutal overnight attack by Fulani Herdsmen. By dawn, at least 51 lives (of which Christians) were lost, and the entire community was shocked, mourning and looking for answers.
According to local sources, the attackers entered the village at night, burned the house and targeted residents while sleeping. Many of the victims are members of the Christian agricultural community, and several others are injured or displaced.
Community leaders say the attack was sudden and devastating, causing families to mourn the loss of loved ones and work to understand the motivation behind the violence. Houses and property were also destroyed, increasing the burden on survivors.
The Plateau State Government condemned the killings and called for calm. Security agencies have been deployed to the area and it is reported that investigations are being conducted to identify responsible persons and prevent further incidents.
The Barcelona attack is one of several in recent years in central Nigeria where disputes over land use and agricultural rights can sometimes escalate into violent conflict. These recurring events continue to affect the safety and stability of the community, many of which are primarily Christians.
Christian leaders in the region urge the government to strengthen responses to rural insecurities and support the affected families of relief and justice. While the motivation behind the attack is still being investigated, residents say they want lasting peace and protection for the community.
Meanwhile, churches in Plateau State and across the country are providing prayers and support to victims’ families. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) also expressed condolences and called for unity during this difficult time.
As the Zikke community begins to bury the dead and rebuild, there is a strong desire for healing and hope. Many tend to believe in God, while others call for collective efforts for peace, reconciliation and justice.
