Nigeria Immigration Bureau repatriates 62 Malian nationals

The Nigerian Immigration Agency (NIS) has repatriated 62 nationals from the Mali Republic through the Illela control post in Sokoto State.

Mr Tony Akuneme, the controller of Illela Border Command, mentioned this in a statement issued on Sunday, April 20 In Abuja. He revealed that the group included 51 men and 11 women who were accompanied by a team of eight officers, Mamoud Sadiq, to the border from the NIS headquarters in Abuja, using two buses.

The team arrived at the Border Post about 8pm on Friday. Akuneme arrived and said he directed the assistant controller in charge of human resources, Adamu Mshelia, who was also responsible for the counter-step unit, to oversee the appropriate documents for immigration.

Following the standard procedures, the individuals were handed over to officials of the Niger Republic police in Birnin Konni Control Post, where they underwent a second round of screening and documents, which were then received by the Regional Police Chief Commisere.

Akuneme noted in related developments that construction work is underway on the Illela Control Post as part of a broader effort to strengthen border security. The upgrade includes large and mini forward operation bases and is part of NIS Director Kemi Nandap’s movement to curb irregular immigration nationwide.

He said construction companies have started land cleaning and demolishing old, unusable structures. “We are grateful for this upgrade from CG, which coincides with her commitment to curb irregularities and prohibit immigration across the country,” he said.

Akuneme also assured the public that the situation in the Illela and Tangaza areas remained calm and that military and security personnel remained visible in response to potential threats from Lakurawa Bostits.
