President Bola Tinubu will return to Nigeria today, the end of a nearly two-week overseas trip.
President Bayo Onanuga’s special adviser to information and strategy confirmed this through his X handle on Monday.
Onanuga wrote in a short post shared through his X account.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be home today.”
Many have called for the president to face increased insecurity in the country and the rampant killings, especially in Benue and the Plateau states.
The president left Nigeria for Paris on April 2, 2025, saying it was a job visit aimed at reviewing the mid-term performance of his government and assessing key milestones.
However, his long absence has attracted criticism from the opposition, which has surged in the insecurities in several regions, especially the plateau and Benue states.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticized the president for staying abroad through his media aide Paul Ibe and called it “irresponsible” in a wide range of violence.
“Tinubu is not there, Nigeria is burning (daily killing, attacking and territorial losses). It’s unsettling,” Atiku said. “Nigerians are eager for real leadership – there are people present and actively involved.”
Peter Obi, a former Labour presidential candidate, responded to similar concerns, urging the president to return immediately.
“In the two weeks you have been away, more than 150 Nigerians have died from insecurity,” Obi said. I urge the President to quickly pause everything he has done in France and take responsibility by addressing these disturbing issues.
