Tina Knowles opens a surprising chapter in her personal life in her newly released memoir, the mother of the patriarch (global superstars Beyoncé) and Solange: a brief settlement after filing for divorce in 2009 with her ex-husband, Mathew Knowles.
The couple initially split after Mathew’s romance, which led to the birth of one child with another woman.
Still, Tina admits in her memoir that she found herself drawn back to him after seeking counseling and repeatedly worked to win her.
“He changed after the new consultation,” she wrote. “I didn’t believe him at first, but he persisted, proving that he was helped, and when he courted me, I found myself falling in love again. The magnetic tension between us… is stronger than ever.”
Tina revealed that she initially filed for divorce because she felt she had no choice after her betrayal.
Still, in 2010, they secretly reignited their relationship and even sneaked away to avoid upsetting their daughter.
The fact came out on Mother’s Day when Beyoncé and Solange were surprised by Galveston of Tina, Texas.
Tina recalls Beyoncé reacting quietly while Solange is even more excited.
“Beyoncé knows better than Solange, and I know who just protects me,” Tina shared. “Each of them loves their father in a different way.”
Despite the temporary reunion, Tina finally chose to move forward and ended her divorce with Mathew in 2011. She later married actor Richard Lawson in 2015, which ended in 2024 with a divorce.
She wrote in reflection on her journey: “I obviously know that my relationship with Matthew is unhealthy and it’s the fear of acting alone that has left me in trouble.”
