Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, was sentenced to death, resulting in the death of the late gospel singer.

The ruling was made by Judge Njideka Nwosu-iheme of the Federal Capital High Court in Abuja on Monday, April 28, 2025, with Osinachi Nwachukwu’s husband being sentenced to death.

Nwachukwu was found guilty of causing her tragic death through abusive mode on April 8, 2022. The court concluded that the prosecutors had the burden of proof, leading to his conviction of charges including charges of homicide, spouse assault and cruel acts against a child.

Nwachukwu was tried on June 3, 2022 by the Federal Attorney General’s Office on behalf of the federal government and faces 23 charges. During the trial, 17 witnesses were called, including two children who opposed the father. The prosecution also presented 25 exhibitions in court.

In defense, Nwachukwu testified and called four witnesses when presenting four exhibitions. His defense attorney Reginald Nwali begged for leniency and urged the court to express mercy on the judgment. However, prosecutor’s attorney Mrs. Adelonk Imara called for strict punishment under the law.

Justice Nwosu-iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death on charges of murder. He has also been sentenced to other prison sentences for other crimes. This includes multiple counts over two years with specific fees of N500,000 and N200,000 fines. Nwachukwu also obtained various jail terms on other charges, including one charge of six months and another three years.

The ruling marks the end of a highly publicized case that has drawn attention to issues of domestic violence and justice in Nigeria. This is especially after the premature death of beloved gospel artist Osinachi Nwachukwu.
