Peter Nwachukwu, the late Gospel music sensation husband Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been sentenced to death by sitting in the High Court of the Federal Capital High Court (FCT) in Wuse 2 District, Abuja.
The court ruled that the prosecution, led by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federal Attorney General (OAGF), proved its case without a doubt, bearing the huge burden required to sentence Nwachukwu.
Nwachukwu was initially arraigned on June 3, 2022, which included 23 charges including homicide, spouse assault, cruelty and criminal intimidation. Throughout the trial, the prosecutor introduced 17 witnesses, including the couple’s two children, who made painful testimony about the ongoing abuse within the family. There are 25 evidence in 25 documents that depict the grim picture of the ongoing domestic violence hidden behind Osigani’s successful music career.
In the defense, Nwachukwu testified himself and summoned four witnesses to submit four exhibitions. However, the court ruled that the evidence against him was overwhelming and dismissed the defense’s efforts.
Before the sentencing was announced, Nwachukwu’s lawyer Reginald Nwali begged for leniency, citing his father’s role. But the prosecution, led by Mrs. Aderonke Imana, urged the court to use the full weight of the law to provide justice for Osinachi and other victims of domestic violence.
In addition to the first sentence of death on the charge of homicide, Justice Nwosu-iheme also sentenced Nwachukwu to various prison terms: other charges: two years 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 18; count 10 six months; and the 11th Earl’s three years. He was also fined 6 and 200,000 count 7.
The judgment marks a critical moment in Nigeria’s struggle with domestic violence, conveying a clear message that abuse – no matter how hidden it is, will meet the full power of the law.
