Popular businessman and socialite Emeka Okonkwo (the well-known E-Money) broke his silence after being arrested by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for alleged abuse of naira and foreign currency.
E-Money was reportedly picked up and dropped off at his home in Lagos and sent to Abuja for inquiries after viral videos showed him squirting money at public events – a direct violation of the cash handling law of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He was later released on the same day.
In an article published shortly after the release, E-Noone shared his video with the title:
“Note! EFCC reminds us: it is illegal to spray naira (or any currency) in parties/events! Let us celebrate responsibly and avoid fines. Respect our currency!”
He added,
“If you have to donate at a party, make sure to put it in a basket or a bowl or container in front of a person… Ignorance is not an excuse.”
The post sparked a mixed response, with some praising his calmness and others criticizing the EFCC for selective execution.
The arrests added an increasing list of public figures, who were under scrutiny in recognition of the luxurious cash displays at the event.
