The Labor faction led by Julius Abure ruled out any possibility of joining the coalition before the 2027 election to ensure it focuses on the intention of internal mergers and strategic reconstruction.

The party outlined this position in a communiqué released on May 2 after the National Executive Council meeting held at its national headquarters.

The communique was signed by the faction’s president Julius Abure and state secretary Farouk Ibrahim, and explicitly stated that the party was “not not and not part of any alliance” in the next ordinary poll. Instead, the faction promises to focus on strengthening its internal structure, strengthening membership, and refine its political strategy to improve opportunities in the 2027 election.

The NEC also reaffirmed the legitimacy of the party’s National Congress held at NNEWI on March 27, 2024, and asserted that the gathering was in line with the party’s norms and was correctly communicated to the Independent National Election Commission (INEC). The Council approved the list of interim representatives approved at the NEC meeting held in Asaba on March 20.

The party said the Supreme Court confirmed the party’s power in determining the party’s internal affairs, and the court’s April 4 judgment confirmed its decision to recognize the organ. The NEC reiterated its full support for the Abure-led National Working Committee and expressed its confidence in guiding the party to an electoral victory.

The committee also congratulated George Moghalu on his appearance as a gubernatorial candidate for the party’s upcoming Anambra elections and urged voters to support his candidacy in a Nov. 8 poll.

In a move against party discipline, the NEC formed a five-member team to investigate allegations of anti-party activities, including those against Abia Governor Alex Otti. The committee chaired by Ayo Olorunfemi is secretary with Umar Farouk Ibrahim, including Kehinde Edun, Dudu Manuga and Callistus Ihejiagwa. The team has two weeks to submit its findings.

Governor Oti spoke on TV on Friday, May 2, dismissing Abure’s leadership, saying: “When you go through the Supreme Court’s ruling, you know Abure is just Masturb@Ting.
