Federal College of Education now awards bachelor's degree - FG

The federal government of Nigeria has approved the implementation of the dual authorization policy for all federal education institutions across the country after the promulgation of the Federal Institutes of Education Act (2023).

Federal Ministry of Education Press Folasade Boriowo announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the legislation into law, marking a major breakthrough in the reform of teacher education in Nigeria. This law enables the Federal Institute of Education (FCOES) to award both a certificate of education and a bachelor’s degree in education in Nigeria.

Announced the policy launch in Abuja, Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa said: “The dual authorization policy represents not only a reform, but also a revolution in teacher preparation that enables FCOE to offer NCE and bachelor’s degrees. The initiative’s initiative body, expands the quality of classrooms and enhances quality guidance across Niger across Nigeria.

Under the bill, all FCOEs that meet the national university committee standards are now eligible for dual tasks. This inclusive policy ensures that institutions can participate regardless of their establishment date after meeting the prescribed requirements.

The Minister stressed the significance of the policy, noting that allowing FCOE to provide degrees will improve the skills of educators to meet the changing needs of the education sector.

The Minister said: “I am delighted to have strategic interaction with our staff unions and management at the Federal Institute of Education (FCOES).

“As part of our goal of enhancing teacher training and improving education as a whole, we are moving forward with the revised law governing FCOE.

“The bill, which was approved by Mr. President in 2023, now allows the college to award National Certificate of Education (NCE) and Bachelor of Education degrees.

“As Mr. President said, ‘Young people are the heartbeat of our great nation.” The heart is the most critical organ in the human body, and to function with the highest capacity, our students must be well educated and taught effectively.

“During the conference, I stressed the way we educate students to develop. The old methods are no longer effective in today’s society. If we are to succeed, we must adapt to meeting international standards.

“The narrative surrounding being a teacher, and becoming a teacher more broadly must also change. Teachers, students, scholars and parents must respect each other. Teaching is a valuable profession; without teachers and educators, society would not be the life they are today. They are an integral part of the establishment of this country and this great country.

He added: “The ministry is committed to ensuring the dual mission of the upcoming school year starting in September 2025.”
