Experienced Nigerian singer and activist Eedris Abdulkareem has publicly shown support for social media critic Martins Vincent Otse after his recent arrest.
The legendary artist paused during a performance at a recent event and called on audiences to demand the release of detained activists. In viral videos circulating online, Eedris calls on fans to raise their cell phone torches and chants “Free VDM” Repeated calls eagerly obeyed a vibrant crowd.
The outspoken musician is no stranger to controversy, and he uses this moment to criticize the government’s increasingly strict dissent. He lamented the rising cost of living in the country, pointing to the rising prices of basic items such as data and rice, while accusing the authorities of silent citizens of speaking.
Eedris pointed out that Nigerians are not asking for too much, only basic knowledge, but condemn the government for focusing on trivial matters rather than solving urgent national problems.
The solidarity performance comes after the recent Eedris Abdulkareem’s Eedris Abdulkareem track was announced by the Eedris Abdulkareem Festival, following the move that was openly opposed. VDM has pledged to sponsor a mix of songs and features in its videos, while slamming authorities for wasting resources on censorship amid the more serious problems the country faces.
The incident has since strengthened online dialogue on freedom of speech and government accountability in Nigeria.
