Defection: Will one-party state suffocate Nigeria and lead to anarchy? Goodluck Jonathan Warning

Former President Goodluck Jonathan warned that any attempt to impose a one-party system in Nigeria would suffocate the political space of the United States and potentially lead to chaos and anarchy.

He issued a warning on Wednesday, May 7 on a commemorative speech and tribute day in memory of the late Federal Information Commissioner and South-South leader Edwin Clark.

Jonathan acknowledged that while Julius Nyerere’s one-party system in Tanzania united a multi-ethnic country, it was achieved through a process of intentional and inclusiveness rather than through political manipulation. He stressed that if Nigeria wants to adopt such a system, it must be carried out procedurally, not through coercion or political planning.

His comments are all Progressive Congress (APC) following widespread defections from opposition parties such as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP).

Jonathan further stated that Clark described Clark as his father’s character, emphasizing the kind of person who could not replace him. He praised the late Yiya leader’s outstanding memory, courage and courage to stick to his beliefs.
