Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, Director General of the Organization for Standards in Nigeria (son), warned that there are increasing numbers of counterfeit and unqualified products in major markets across the country.
Okeke said the products were imported into the country by people he called the economic disruptor.
DG issued an alarm when it disrupted substandard tires, wires, spark plugs and other bad products worth billions of naira.
Dr. Okeke, represented by Mr. Manji Pious, Director of Inspectors and Compliance, said the disruption was aligned with the organization’s efforts to prevent the influx of unqualified and fake products in the country.
However, he was disappointed that despite his son’s efforts, importers continued to flood the market with dangerous products.
He explained that although the son did not allow such commodities to enter the country due to its multifaceted meaning, including the destruction of the country’s foreign reserves, because they pose a danger to the lives and property of consumers, it was not happy to destroy the occupied commodities.
He said: “This action is not only an administrative form, but also affirms our unwavering commitment to public safety, consumer protection and promotion of fair trade practices in Nigeria.
“This disruption leads to a lot of economic losses because traders lose not only money from sources, but also goods.”
He further explained that his organization has been conducting an Enlightenment campaign to educate merchants that need to appreciate the huge losses they and the country continue to buy counterfeit and unqualified products, and how they best engage in business importing standard and real products.
DG further said that destroyed items range from plush tires and spark plugs, steel doors and cables, all of which cannot be consistently tested and poses a serious risk to the health and safety of Nigerians.
