A Zimbabwe police officer has been convicted and sentenced for assaulting a teacher in a criminal investigation in Chiredzi. Officer Owen Manjengwa was found guilty of assault after attacking the teacher with his open hands and batons, causing internal injuries.
According to a communiqué issued by the State Prosecutor Zimbabwe (NPAZ) on May 8, 2025, the attack occurred at Mhlanguledzi Primary School in Chikobetz at around 3 pm on February 21, 2024. Manjengwa, stationed at the Chikombedzi Police State, turned to the teacher for help to investigate the investigation of the illegal entry case the day before.
“The criminal … told the victim that he was being arrested. The complainant denied the allegations and the criminal then beat him.” According to reports, the teacher was beaten on the hip with a baton and beaten on his face with his hands open, resulting in internal injuries.
The 40-year-old officer was fined $200 after the trial at Chicobez Magistrates Court. If he fails to pay the fine, he will serve 90 days in prison. Furthermore, the magistrate imposed a four-month prison term, which was suspended entirely for five years, on the condition that Manjengwa had not committed similar crimes during this period.
