
An IED explosion in the Mafar local government area of Borno State has caused five injured children, one of whom has lost one hand.
The explosion occurred around 14:25 hours on Thursday, May 8, 2025, when children unknowingly tampered with IED equipment, hidden in a block hole near the culvert at the ongoing construction site at the new MAFA Central Mosque.
The victim, four men and one woman, is about Abdullahi and Kwalid Aljenti’s Idhi
The explosion caused varying degrees of damage, and one of the boys lost his hand.
Following the incident, the combined team of the Explosive Disposal, Biology, Radiology and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) troops from the Joint Police and Civilian Working Group (CJTF) of the MAFA Department responded.
The site was blocked, auxiliary equipment was searched, and jars were used as simple containers for IED discovery and professional detonation.
Four victims were referred to Maiduguri University Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for treatment, while one victim was injured, was treated and discharged at MAFA General Hospital.
In response to the attack, the EOD-CBRN team conducted explosive risk education (EORE) for children and community members of MAFA.
