Labour suspends Lagos chairman and disbands ward executives

Lagos State’s Labour Party has suspended its former state chairman, Rev. Dayo Ekong, and another official, Sam Okpala, alleged allegations of grave misconduct and violation of the party’s constitution.

The announcement came after the meeting of the Lagos State Care Executive Committee, which also dissolved the executive committees of all local governments and wards across the state.

Committee Secretary Rotimi Odunaike and Dorcas I. Omorodion explained that the disciplinary action was to restore orders and ensure compliance with the party’s constitution.

Pastor Ekong, who previously served as dual positions as President and Secretary of State Finance, was suspended for six months. “The former state chairman of the party, pastor (Mrs.) Dayo Ekong Turk, was suspended for six months for serious misconduct and violation of the party’s constitution, while holding the office of the state chairman and the state finance secretary,” the statement said.

The entire former state executive committee was also suspended for six months on suspicion of anti-party activities and failure to uphold the party’s constitution. “Each member of the former state executive committee was suspended for six months for failing to uphold the party’s constitution and anti-party activities,” Odunaike said.

In addition, all local governments and ward executive committees established under Ekong’s leadership were dissolved and their members were suspended. “All local governments and ward executive committees in Lagos State, appointed by the Reverend (MRS) Dayo Exco, have been dissolved, and its members have suspended anti-party activities for six months and are in immediate effect,” the statement added.

The move represents a major restructuring of Labour’s Lagos chapter due to ongoing internal disputes.
