Michael Okpara’s final year student at Agriculture University, during football training, Nwachukwu Omiko Umudike (Mouau), Nwachukwu Omiko fell and D! Ed.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 at the University’s San Siro Football Stadium.
The mechanical engineering student is said to be playing football with his companions when he suddenly collapsed.
The immediate efforts of classmates to revive him failed, prompting them to remind the university of health services.
The student was taken to the hospital but was confirmed by a doctor on arrival, according to a statement signed by the university’s chief public relations officer Ubadire Agua.
“He was immediately taken to the University’s Federal Medical Center at the rate of his neck breaking, with an oxygen-equipped ambulance,” the statement said.
“Despite rapid intervention and medical efforts, the university expressed deep regret for the loss of promising students.
“The university regrets that despite efforts to make Omiko live first, it has caused him to lose the cold hand of death.”
Vice President Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe also expressed his sincere condolences to Omiko’s family, the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology, and the entire student community.
University administrators call on all students to check their health priorities by checking their health priorities with the University Health Services upon arrival on campus.
It also advises students with underlying health conditions to avoid intense physical activity.
