Nigerian music superstar David Adedeji Adeleke (commonly known as Davido) publicly affirmed his Igbo legacy while responding to a divisive social media post that criticized his close ties to the Igbo community.
The controversy began with X user @yakbel posted a tribal comment on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, warning Davido not to associate with Igbos and suggesting betrayal is inevitable. Post reading:
“Davido is just Dey carrying the ibo whole body until Dem Am e rests. Yoruba boy Dey Frolick joins Ibos with Ibos in 2025, they want your head, you have to belong to everything they have. You can never satisfy IBOS OOO.
Davido responded quickly and boldly, refuting tribal sentiment, and replied: “Lol, I’m the bloody Ibo.”
His manifesto has since attracted widespread applause on social media, with many Nigerians praising Afrobeats stars for their rhetoric promoting unity and rejecting division.
The comment surfaced shortly after Davido held Bright Chimezie of Senior Highlife Light at his residence on Monday, May 19, 2025. The two artists connected via video call a few days ago, during which Davido acknowledged Chimezie’s classic tracks Because of English As the inspiration behind his latest single With you feature Oma lying.
Apart from music, Davido’s connection to Igbo’s legacy is deeply integrated. His wife, Lucahail from Imo State and his late grandmother Esther Nnena Adeleke (néeakparah) is also a drop in Igbo.
The singer’s statement further exacerbated the dialogue on cultural unity in the entertainment industry in Nigeria, with many praising him for his firm opposition to tribal prejudice.
