President Bola Tinubu canceled the national broadcast originally planned for Thursday morning to mark Nigeria’s Democracy Day on June 12.

A brief statement issued by the Office of the Secretary of the Federal Government (OSGF) on Wednesday earlier announced the president’s intention to address the country. However, a later update from the same office confirmed the cancellation.

The notice signed by Segun Imohiosen, director of information and public relations at OSGF, explained that the broadcast was shelved due to President Tinubu’s plan to attend a joint meeting of the National Assembly on Democratic Day.

A statement signed on behalf of the Office of the Secretary of the Federal Government (OSGF) has released a revised timetable for the celebration of Democracy Day 2025.

    Key updates include:

    1. President’s National Broadcast: Cancel

    2. Democracy Day Parade: Cancel

    3. Joint meeting of the National Assembly: President Tinubu meets at 12:00 pm

    4. Public speech: Schedule at 4:00 pm at Abuja State Assembly Conference Center

The topic of the speech is “Consolidating the benefits of Nigerian democracy: the need for lasting reform.” According to the Organization Committee, the coverage of the activity will be limited to recognized state legislators.

In a significant departure from tradition, President Tinubu will convey his message on Democracy Day at the joint session of the National Assembly, rather than through the usual national broadcast. The move reflects compliance on the day as citizens await his comments on the governance and future of Nigeria’s democratic reforms.
