WhatsApp has introduced new monetization features that allow businesses and creators to earn directly from content on the app.
“Today, we are introducing some new features to our update tab that are home to channels and status,” the post reads.
New features include a channel subscription, which allows users to support their favorite creators by paying a monthly fee for exclusive content.
The company also launched a “Promotion Channel,” a tool that enables administrators to increase their visibility by using as suggestions when exploring the channel catalog’s suggestions.
The third feature is status advertising, which will integrate the advertising in the status section to enable the enterprise to promote a product or service and facilitate direct conversations with interested users.
WhatsApp says ad targeting will rely on limited data, such as user location, language and interactions in the Updates tab.
According to the company, people who link their WhatsApp to Meta Account Center may also see ads based on their activity on meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
The company stresses that end-to-end encryption still exists in private chats, groups and phone calls.
WhatsApp added: “Like everything we do on WhatsApp, we have built these features in the most private way. Your personal messages, calls and status are still end-to-end encrypted.”
