In a recent statement, the Nigerian Athletics Federation (AFN) shared its response to Ofili’s report confiding with Turkey.
The Nigerian Athletics Federation (AFN) responded to reports that the Nigerian sprint star (Favor Ofili) chose to be loyal to Türkiye.
According to AFN President Tonobok Okowa, while the federal government has not received any formal exchanges from Ofili or World Athletics, they acknowledged the report in a way that was shocked and disappointed.
Ofili, one of Nigeria’s most promising athletes and national record holders, reportedly put forward a request to change her sports nationality.
In his statement, Okowa addressed the frustration that could have led to Ofili’s decision, as despite possible mistakes in the past, efforts have been made in recent years to improve support for athletes, especially in terms of funding and anti-doping compliance.
He also mentioned that the AFN had hoped to repair the fence with Ofili who had not participated in the recent state trial or incident.
“We read and heard about her decisions from the media. Unfortunately, but if that was really what she wanted, we wouldn’t stop her,” Okowa said.
“She is still our sister and daughter and we wish her all the best. ”
Except for special circumstances, the World Track and Field Regulations provide for a three-year waiting period for athletes who change national representatives. As of now, OFILI is still officially listed under Nigeria leadership.
