It was a sad day for supporters of the Nigerian Superhawks and football world after Peter Rufai died after a brief illness.
The Nigerian Football Federation confirmed the death of Peter Rufai on its official social media account on Thursday, July 3, 2025. Rufai is a key part of the Super Hawks, which won the African Cup of Nations in 1994, and the team won the African Cup of Nations in 1994.
The NFF statement is read as follows,
“Always in our hearts, the Dodo. We mourn the legendary Super Eagle goalkeeper, the giant of Nigerian football and the legendary goalkeeper Peter Rufai of the 1994 AFCON champion. Your legacy lives between the sticks and other regions.
But, four things you need to know about Peter Rufai
(1) Royal Root
He was born on August 24, 1963 in Lagos, and Rufi is the son of the king of the Idimu tribe. Although he ascended the throne after his father died in 1999, he refused to focus on his football career in discovery and said: “I lost the opportunity to be king, but I never regret it.”
(2) Mainland success:
Rufai won 65 blocks for Nigeria and was the top goalkeeper for the Super Eagles in the 1994 African Cup of Nations victories in Tunisia. In that game, he was remembered for his semifinals at the target of the Gossip Coast.
(3) European club professions in five countries:
Rufai spent twenty years in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the Benin Republic, which included Lokeren, Beveren, Forward, Eales, Farense, Hércules, Deportivo lacoruña and Gil Vicente.
(4) Significant ratings and legacy after retirement
He achieved a rare scoring feat for his country – a hit percentage of his 6-0 defeat to Ethiopia in the 1993 AFCON qualifier was his only goal of 65 career caps. After retirement, he moved to Spain and opened a goalkeeper academy to mentor young talents.
