The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (Nimet) began warning of widespread thunderstorms and heavy rains across the country since Monday, which has raised concerns about flash floods in several states. The three-day forecast, released in Abuja on Sunday, marks an increase in risk as the United States enters a critical phase of the rainy season.
The agency predicts that thunderstorms will be carried out in the northern states on Monday in Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Katsina will be experiencing an increase later that day, the agency predicts that it will intensify later that day. “Flooding is likely to occur in parts of Adamawa, Taraba and Bauchi states during the forecast period,” Nimet said in a statement.

By Wednesday, thunderstorms are expected to sweep through Talaba and Kaduna in the morning, later in isolated storms and mild rainfall in Borno, Baucho, Gombi, Gigua and Kano. The central region will see rain again in the morning and more heavy rain before the afternoon. In the southern states, intermittent rainfall is predicted, including Lagos, Rivers, Belsal and Cross Rivers. Bayelsa faces the highest risk of flooding.
Warnings to residents The agency urges residents to take precautionary measures. “States that avoid driving in heavy rains and that there is a possibility of flash flooding should immediately activate their emergency systems,” the forecast said. Nimet also advises families to secure loose objects, wear warm clothes on cool nights, and disconnect appliances during storms. The airline operator was told to seek airport-specific weather briefings for flight planning. Nimet encourages Nigerians to follow updates on their official website to stay prepared.
