At a Friday summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his confidence in his ability to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine at the meeting.
When Trump encountered a long handshake in the Elmendorf-Richardson military facility in Alaskan City, Alaska, Trump was treated on the red carpet.
Warm greetings set a friendly tone for always difficult negotiations. But, a few hours later, Trump and Putin left their respective planes, and the atmosphere became softer a few hours later – no clear breakthrough in the war in Ukraine.
Here are some of the key gains from their meetings:
“No deal until an agreement is reached”
While the meeting is expected to take about seven hours, it ends less than three hours. After the negotiations, Trump and Putin spoke with relatively brief pre-prepared statements. No leader asked any questions.
Putin said his country is committed to ending the war, but the “main cause” of the conflict must be lifted to keep the agreement long-lasting.
Putin also warned Ukraine and the European Union not to throw “wrench wrench” and informed the attempt to use “falling deals to provoke provocations”.
A relatively soft Trump praised the “extremely productive meeting” and said “many views have agreed.” “The chance of getting there is great” – referring to the ceasefire – but admits to maintaining huge points with Moscow, including at least one “important” one.
