The newly introduced secondary school course in Nigeria will provide modules on journalism, computer programming, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and fact checking for the first time.
Dada Olusegun, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s senior special counsel on social media, disclosed the reforms, sharing excerpts from unpublished course documents.
According to the document, journalism will now form part of the English module at the senior secondary level, while programming will be taught in the junior and senior classes. AI and robotics have been included in the newly created topic Digital Literacy for advanced students.
The government said the reforms aim to provide students with skills related to a technology-driven world while enhancing their critical thinking, creativity and innovation abilities.
At the junior level 2, subjects will cover mathematics, English, comprehensive science, social studies, language, creative arts and physical education, as well as new digital literacy and coding modules such as Internet research, Python basics, Scratch and Robotics suites.
For high school students, the course expands to advanced mathematics, science and social sciences, technology and innovation topics introduce AI, robotics, cybersecurity, programming, and digital entrepreneurship. News, fact-checking and public speaking will also be taught in English and communication.
Students are expected to complete a final year research project involving data collection, analysis and defense. Education experts describe the overhaul as a step towards the global competitiveness of Nigerian students in the knowledge economy.
