The timeless elegance of Italian fashion legend Giorgio Armani changed global fashion and built a multi-billion dollar empire, his Milan Home was 91 years old.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of his iconic label. Armani is expected to celebrate his anniversary at Milan Fashion Teek, but his absence in June’s men’s clothing show (for the first time in decades) has attracted attention to his health.
Armani Group confirmed his death in a statement Thursday, calling him a “relative drive” of the brand, and he has been committed to his craft until the end. The cause of death was not disclosed.
“Due to infinite grief, the Armani Group announced the death of its creator, founder and relentless drive: Giorgio Armani, who, until the end, worked until the last few days, dedicated himself to the company, collection and many ongoing projects,” the company said.
A private funeral will be held as he wishes, while a public memorial is planned for this weekend in Armani/Teatro, Milan.
Armani’s Forbes, estimated at $12.1 billion, is one of the most influential designers in the past 50 years. His minimalist but sophisticated tailoring redefines fashion, in a new era of sophistication that influenced Hollywood red carpets, corporate wardrobes and film worlds.
