Professor Soyinka reveals why he accepted President Bola Tinubu’s renamed the National Theater to Wole Soyinka Cultural Center and Creative Arts Center.

Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka reveals why he accepted the renaming of the Lagos National Theatre, despite criticizing the renaming of the individual.

The National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos has been renamed by President Bola Tinubu as the Wol Soyka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts.

Soyinka reflects his long-standing opposition to the public monuments of Nigeria in reopening and redefining the reopening and redefining of the rebuilding.

Soyinka, who often opposes naming public buildings and roads after individuals or past leaders, said: “I committed a great dedication that others are not worth doing so, and then I had to stand up in public and watch my name be placed in another fable.

“I accepted this honor with a mixed feeling. First, I’m notorious for criticizing any grant. Some of our past leaders’ personal grants to public monuments, and ultimately everything is named after them.

“In view of the general estimate, I would be modestly saying that about 25% of monuments, whether buildings or roads, especially roads in this country, are real and deserved.”

Soyinka reflects on Nigerian theaters and pioneers such as Hubert Ogunde and Opera composer Adam Fiberesima, who eventually concluded: “Someone must carry cans.”

Soyinka has a nostalgic connection with the National Theatre, reviewing its original architecture in the military era and its significance during the Festac ’77.

Over the years, he lamented the building’s decline, describing it as “unredeemable” and “like a slum.”
